Though not as vigilant as the western countries, in India too, legislations have been enacted since long, for the protection of environment. The Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, The Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, The Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Cess Act, 1977, The Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, The Indian Forest Act, 1927, The Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, The Insecticides Act, 1968, The Atomic Energy Act, 1962, The Factories Act, 1948, The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 are a few of the legislations in India engaged for the protection of environment. After the Bhopal disaster the Indian Government and Indian public have become aware and vigilant in protecting its environment. It was the late Shri Rajeev Gandhi who started the marathon task of Clean Ganga Operation.
